Latest News
Altex Coatings are proud to introduce a number of evolutionary improvements to our well respected general purpose epoxy coating, Altra~Build 536.
These improvements have been brought about partly in response to customer feedback and partly through an ongoing R&D process applied to all of the Altex range of coatings.
The ubiquitous nature of the many applications to which Altra~Build 536 is specified and used makes it one of the most versatile high performance protective coatings currently on the New Zealand and Australian markets.
Improvements
Productivity
- Improved dry to handling increases shop turn-over
- Excellent low temperature cure – down to -5ºC
- Less viscous – may be sprayed using less thinner / at higher solids
- More user-friendly re-coat window – self re-coat or with other coatings
Durability
- Backbone reacted with proprietary flexibiliser – less prone to chipping
- Improved resistance to age-embrittlement
Thermal Stability
- Syntactic foam and flexibilised backbone improve performance under insulation up to 120ºC
Engineering
- 13% lighter weight
- Easier post-erection site touch-up – minimal preparation and 90 day self re-coat
Environmental
- Low VOC – 80% VS
- Reduced Hazardous Air Polluting Substances (HAPS)
- Less thinning required at application – lower applied VOC than most competitor products
All of these improvements come with no detrimental effect to performance expectations. Altra~Build 536 is proven over many years and backed up by thorough laboratory testing.
Corrosion Resistance
No matter whether used as a self-priming coating or a barrier coating within a system Altra~Build 536 exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance, as evidenced by test results and corroborated by field exposure:-
System (All tests) - 2 coats of Altra~Build 536 at 150 microns per coat to total 300 microns DFT applied to abrasive blasted mild steel panels.
Q-Fog Cyclic Prohesion Test Procedure - ASTM G 85.A5.
- 4000 hours exposure
- Zero field corrosion
- Moderate scribe corrosion
- Zero blistering
Immersion in Sea Water
- 4800 hours exposure
- Zero field corrosion
- Zero field blistering
Chemical Resistance
Altra~Build 536 is widely specified into industrial complexes such as pulp and paper mills, fertilizer and chemical works, petrochemical industry (on and off shore), food processing where CIP chemicals are used, and for many aggressive tank lining situations such as sewage treatment plants (WWTP).
Altra~Build 536 is also the coating of choice for marine bunkering, ballast, potable water and grey and black water tanks.
In continuous immersion situations some coating discolouration may take place however this does not adversely affect the integrity or the long-term performance of the coating.
7 day Chemical Spot Test – ASTM D 1308(f)
| Diesel | No effect | No blistering |
| Heavy fuel oil | No effect | No blistering |
| Motor / hydraulic oil | No effect | No blistering |
| Unleaded petrol | No effect | No blistering |
| Ammonia 10% | No effect | No blistering |
| Caustic soda 35% | No effect | No blistering |
| Nitric acid 10% | Slight yellowing | No blistering |
